A guide find Focus and Thrive

A guide find Focus and Thrive

A photography colleague recently asked me a question that stopped me in my tracks: What first inspired you to pick up a camera? What did you want from photography?

And honestly, it took me back. Back to the very beginning, when it wasnโ€™t about business plans or algorithms or even producing โ€œperfectโ€ work. I picked up a camera because I wanted to create. I wanted to explore something artistic, something raw, something deeply personal. I wanted to feel passionate. That fire I felt in the early daysโ€”it was all about discovery, curiosity, and the joy of making something from nothing.

Somewhere along the way, itโ€™s easy to lose touch with that. The daily grind, the pressure to constantly be โ€œbetterโ€โ€”it can dim that spark. But as I look ahead to 2025, Iโ€™ve decided itโ€™s time to double down on myself. To reconnect with the things that first lit me up. To reignite that fire.

And itโ€™s got me wondering: What about you? What first drew you in? What was it about photographyโ€”or whatever your creative passion isโ€”that made you pick it up and say, โ€œYes, this is mineโ€?

Maybe this is the year to find your way back to that feeling. To stop chasing and start nurturing. To explore not just what you do, but why you do it.

So hereโ€™s my invitation: as we step into this new year, letโ€™s slow down. Letโ€™s dig deeper. Letโ€™s create for the love of it. So it started me thinking about some projects I can dive into, to reignite my passion for photography and creativity, perhaps itโ€™s something that might spark you as well?

1. Journaling for Inspiration

  • Daily Creativity Journal: Write about what inspires you, reflect on your creative journey, and explore ideas. Pair your entries with photos youโ€™ve taken that day.

  • Gratitude + Photo Journal: Document one thing youโ€™re grateful for daily with a matching image.

2. Year-Long Challenges

  • 52-Week Photography Challenge: Each week, focus on a specific theme or technique. This could be as simple as โ€œshadows,โ€ โ€œmovement,โ€ or โ€œself-portrait.โ€

  • Project 365: Take one photo every day. Challenge yourself to find beauty in the mundane or explore different styles throughout the year.

3. Short-Term Challenges

  • 30-Day Photography Challenge: Set a daily prompt for a monthโ€”like colours, emotions, textures, or specific genres (macro, portraits, etc.).

  • Photo-a-Day Mood Challenge: Capture an image reflecting your mood or emotion daily.

4. Revisit Old Work

  • Before & After Project: Take an older photo you loved and reshoot it with new techniques or perspectives.

  • Re-edit Old Photos: Use your current editing style on older images to see how your vision has evolved.

5. Thematic Projects

  • Passion Projects: Focus on a subject or theme that resonates deeply with youโ€”like florals, self-portraits, or abandoned places.

  • Storytelling Series: Create a photo series that tells a story, whether itโ€™s fictional, documentary-style, or inspired by your own life.

6. Experimentation

  • Explore New Genres: Try something youโ€™ve never done beforeโ€”like astrophotography, street photography, or surreal composites.

  • Creative Techniques: Play with light painting, double exposures, or creative blur to push your boundaries.

7. Personal Growth Challenges

  • Mindful Photography: Go on intentional photo walks where you slow down, connect with your surroundings, and shoot what moves you.

  • Self-Portrait Series: Explore self-expression through a series of portraits that tell your story or represent different aspects of yourself.

8. Mixed Media Exploration

  • Photo & Paint: Print your images and add mixed media like paint or embroidery to transform them into something new.

  • Digital Art: Combine your photography with digital tools to create composite or surreal art pieces.

  • Try a new medium entirely, like cyanotype

Let me know your thoughts, Iโ€™d love to know if this sparked something in you? Is there a project you feel drawn to HOW WILL YOU IGNITE THE PASSION?
