MagCam Phone Grip & Fill Light Review

MagCam Phone Grip & Fill Light Review

The MagCam Phone Grip by PGYTech is one of those little gadgets that promises to make mobile shooting feel more like handling a real camera, and for the most part, it delivers. It has a smart modular design, a built-in power bank and a handy magnetic remote, but it also has a couple of quirks you need to know about. I am using mine with my Samsung S25+ Mobile Phone.

Note: PGYTech sent the MagCam Phone Grip to review. However, this is a completely independent review. All thoughts about this item are my own.

MagCam Phone Grip by PGYTech

A more DSLR-style experience

My hands aren’t what they used to be, and holding a flat phone for longer sessions can be a pain, literally. This is where the MagCam shines. The grip gives you something solid to wrap your fingers around, more like a compact DSLR, which makes all the difference. I could shoot one-handed far more comfortably than I can with a bare phone, especially when filming behind-the-scenes or quick reels.

Modular design that actually makes sense

The grip separates into three parts:

  • Magnetic wireless charging module (or you can use a USB-C cable)

  • Bluetooth remote module up to 10m

  • Charging grip module

You can use them together or mix and match depending on what you're shooting. It’s a flexible little system and far more adaptable than most phone grips.

Built-in stand and charging

The charging module doubles as a super-slim stand, only 5.5 mm thick, and props your phone up to 58 degrees in portrait or landscape. Perfect for filming hands-free or checking framing, or long exposures.

The 3000mAh battery isn’t huge, but it’s enough for a top-up in the middle of a shoot. You get 5W wireless charging and 10W wired charging through USB-C. And yes, it charges the Samsung S25+.

Magnetic remote

The magnetic Bluetooth remote snaps on and off the grip, works up to 10 metres away, and supports both iOS and Android. It’s tiny but surprisingly handy for self-portraits and BTS videos.

The part that didn’t impress

The magnet system is a mixed bag. On its own, stuck straight to the phone with the included adhesive pad, it’s… flimsy. The magnet didn’t hold well at all, and the sticker came off on the very first use. Not ideal when you’re trusting it to keep your phone attached to a grip. But keep in mind it is designed for MagSafe cases.

Magnetic Insert in Peak Design Everyday Case

The part that did work brilliantly

The game-changer was pairing it with the Peak Design Everyday Case. Instead of putting the adhesive plate on the back of the phone, I stuck it inside the case, directly onto the magnetic ring. Suddenly, it became rock-solid. No wobble, no peeling, no fear of the phone taking a dive. It would most probably work on the inside or just about any camera case.

If you already use a MagSafe-style case, especially one as robust as Peak Design’s, the MagCam becomes far more reliable.

You can scroll through menus, zoom in and out and half-press auto-focus. It is designed to work in Pro mode, but will also work in Auto, for photo and video. Just remember to have your Bluetooth turned on.

Compatibility

  • Not recommended for Samsung, Sony, Vivo, or Google phones, which is strange, since they assured me it works with my Samsung S25+, and it does.

  • Needs at least 98 mm from the rear camera to the lower edge (basically keep the rear cameras clear)

  • Adapter included for non-MagSafe Android phones (I do not recommend using these)

  • You pair with your phone’s Bluetooth, which was quick and easy

  • A MagGlow fill-light can stack on the opposite side

Mag Glow Fill Light

MagGlow Fill Light Review (Optional Add-On)

The PGYTech MagGlow Fill Light is the companion accessory that turns the MagCam system into a surprisingly capable mini-rig.

Compact and simple

At just 10.5 mm thick, it’s slim enough to toss in any pocket or lens pouch. You control brightness with a simple short-press button that cycles through 15%, 50% and 100%.

The 300mAh battery gives around 30 minutes at full power, which is enough for quick product shots, Zoom calls or a fast portrait touch-up.

Flexible magnetic mounting

The base is magnetised for quick attachment to:

  • MagSafe-compatible phones

  • MagSafe cases

  • The PGYTECH MagCam Phone Grip itself

It attaches instantly and stays put, which makes it handy for on-the-fly shooting.

Hover at any angle

The damping hinge allows stepless rotation, so you can angle the light exactly where you need it. It holds its position without drooping.

Three colour temperatures

A quick tap cycles between 2500K (warm), 5500K (neutral) and 9000K (cool), so you can match whatever lighting environment you’re in.

Wrap-up

Is it the most powerful fill light out there? No. But for its size and price, it’s incredibly convenient. When paired with the MagCam Grip, you get a tiny mobile setup that actually works well for creators who need quick, flattering light without carrying a full lighting kit.

FEATURES:

Slim Design: Overall thickness is controlled at just 10.5mm.
Button-Controlled Brightness: Short-press the brightness button to cycle through three brightness levels (15%, 50%, 100%).
300mAh Battery Capacity: Provides 30 minutes of high-brightness supplementary lighting.
Magnetic Attachment: The base of the fill light is designed with magnets, allowing it to easily attach to MagSafe-compatible phones or phone cases. It can also be magnetically attached to the PGYTECH MagCam Phone Grip.
Stepless Rotation: The light features a damping hinge, allowing it to rotate freely and hover at any angle to meet different lighting needs.
Three Colour Temperatures: After powering on, short-press the power button to cycle through three colour temperatures (2500K/5500K/9000K).

Verdict

The PGYTech MagCam Phone Grip has some genuinely clever features and is a blessing if you struggle with hand strength or just want a more camera-like feel when shooting mobile content. One-handed shooting becomes much easier and far more stable.

The magnet system lets it down out of the box, but pair it with a solid MagSafe-compatible case like the Peak Design Everyday Case, and it transforms into a much more reliable tool. I recently used it to record the behind-the-scenes footage at a recent workshop. Check it out here.

I give it a 4/5; the only letdown is the magnetic attachment directly to the phone.
