News: Luminar’s latest update puts your creative vision in focus
There’s something satisfying about seeing your photographs printed. After all the shooting, editing and second-guessing, you finally have something you can hold, frame or hang on the wall. That’s the thinking behind Luminar’s latest update, which brings upgraded editing tools and a new Signature Printing feature.
Released on October 28, 2026, the Luminar Fall Update is described by Skylum as its biggest update of the year. It introduces improvements to Enhance, Atmosphere, Smart Compositions and AI Assistant, with an emphasis on adapting edits to the photograph and keeping the photographer in control.
Editing that starts with your photograph
Skylum calls the approach behind these improvements Scene-Aware Editing. The idea is that the software analyses the photograph’s light, tones, depth, subject and faces before making adjustments.
For photographers, the aim is more relevant edits that work with the mood of an image. A misty landscape, a softly lit portrait and a bright street scene each need a different approach.
According to research shared by Skylum, more than half of the photographers surveyed see AI as an important part of their editing routine, provided they retain control over the result. Meanwhile, 73% prioritise a natural-looking image over technical perfection, and 76% have reduced or rejected an AI edit because it looked inauthentic.
That last point is familiar territory. A tool can make an impressive adjustment, but you still need to decide whether it suits your photograph.
Enhance gets a more considered approach
The upgraded Enhance tool analyses image conditions, including exposure, colour casts, sky type and the risk of unwanted halos or lost highlight detail.
Skylum says the processing now adapts more closely to each photograph, with protections for skin tones, skies, highlights and colour. The aim is to give photographers more useful adjustments while reducing the chance of an overprocessed result.
Of course, the slider still needs your judgement. Every photograph has its own stopping point.
Atmosphere adds depth to fog and mist
Atmosphere now uses what Skylum describes as 3D volumetric fog, guided by the photograph’s existing depth and light.
Fog can settle closer to the ground, become thinner with height and take on warmth near sunlight. It can also glow around light sources such as street lamps and headlights.
For photographers who enjoy creating mood, this could offer more flexibility when adding mist or strengthening an atmospheric scene. The trick, as always, is making the effect feel at home in the image.
Smart Compositions offers a fresh perspective
The updated Smart Compositions tool considers the main subject, faces, gaze direction and elements that draw the eye before suggesting crops based on classic composition principles.
Sometimes a different crop is all an image needs. Suggestions like these may be useful when you’ve stared at a photograph for so long that you can no longer see another way to frame it.
You still get to decide which version tells your story best.
AI Assistant responds to your editing goals
AI Assistant allows photographers to describe the result they want in a few words. It then suggests adjustments intended to support that creative direction.
For beginners, this could help connect an idea with the tools needed to achieve it. More experienced photographers may find it useful as another starting point when exploring an edit.
From finished edit to signed print
The new Signature Printing feature brings printing into Luminar and allows photographers to add their signature to the finished image.
I like the encouragement to take photographs beyond the screen. We spend plenty of time creating and editing images, but how often do we actually print them? A finished photograph deserves an outing occasionally.
