Ten Months Later... I've Finally Figured Out My K&F CONCEPT Star Filters
Sometimes the best photography gear doesn't reveal its true potential straight away.
Almost ten months ago I reviewed the K&F CONCEPT 67mm Star Filter Set. At the time, I liked the idea behind them, but if I'm honest, I wasn't completely convinced. They certainly worked, but I hadn't yet found a style of photography where they really made me stop and think, "Wow, that's exactly what I was hoping for."

Fast forward ten months, and my opinion has completely changed.
The filters haven't changed.
My photography has.
More importantly, I've finally discovered exactly where these filters belong in my camera bag.
The answer?
Candles.
Sometimes You Just Need the Right Subject
When I first received the filters, I tried them on just about everything.
Fairy lights.
Reflections.
Studio lights.
Anything with a bright highlight.
Some photographs looked nice, but many left me wondering if these filters would spend more time in the cupboard than on my camera.
Looking back, I was expecting the filters to give me something cinematic.
That isn't what they're designed to do.
Like any creative tool, they excel in the right situation.
I just hadn't found that situation yet.
The Moment Everything Clicked
Recently I was photographing one of my creative portrait sessions using a vintage candelabra.
I screwed on the 6-point star filter, looked through the viewfinder...
...and smiled.
Every candle flame burst into beautiful, elegant stars.
Suddenly the portrait had a magical, almost painterly atmosphere. The glow from each candle became part of the storytelling rather than just another light source.
It was subtle.
Elegant.
Exactly the effect I'd been hoping to achieve all those months ago.
That's when I realised I'd been using the filters all wrong.
The Surprise... They Weren't Real Candles
Here's the part that surprised me most.
These weren't real candles.
They were battery-powered LED candles.
Over the past year I've slowly replaced many of my real candles with flickering LED versions. They're safer around flowing fabrics, costumes and backdrops, there's no dripping wax to clean up, and I don't have to worry about open flames in the studio.
The brilliant part?
The K&F CONCEPT Star Filters don't care whether the light comes from a real flame or an LED.
A bright point of light is all they need.
The result is the same beautiful starburst effect, with all the atmosphere and none of the stress.
For creative portrait photography, that's a huge win.
Less Is More
One thing I've also learned is that restraint is everything.
When I first started using the filters, I wanted stars everywhere.
Now I prefer just a handful of bright light sources.
A few candles.
A lantern.
The stars become little accents that help guide your eye through the image instead of dominating it.
Like many photographic effects, subtlety usually wins.
They Won't Fix a Boring Photograph
One lesson that applies to almost every piece of photography gear...
No filter creates a great photograph.
It simply enhances one that's already working.
Good lighting.
Strong composition.
An interesting subject.
A genuine expression.
Those things still matter far more than any filter attached to the front of your lens.
The star filter simply adds another creative layer.
When everything else comes together, that's when it really shines.
My Favourite Combination
At the moment, my favourite setup is surprisingly simple:
A dark background
A vintage candelabra with flickering LED candles
Low-key lighting
A fast lens used wide open

The result feels timeless.
A little cinematic.
A little mysterious.
Exactly the mood I love creating in my portrait work.
Final Thoughts
Looking back, I don't think my original review was wrong.
It reflected exactly where I was at the time.
What has changed is my experience.
Over the past ten months I've experimented with different lighting, different subjects and different creative ideas, and somewhere along the way these little filters went from an interesting novelty to something I genuinely enjoy using.
If you'd asked me ten months ago whether these filters were a must-have, I'd probably have said, "Probably not."
Ask me today?
I'd replace them tomorrow if I lost them.
Not because I use them on every shoot, but because I've finally discovered where they truly belong.
Sometimes the best pieces of photography gear don't impress you on day one.
Sometimes they quietly wait until the right idea comes along.
For me, that idea was candlelight.
And now I can't imagine creating these portraits without them.
