What is Luminar?

If you’ve followed me for a while, you’ll know that I’ve been using Luminar for years, and it regularly pops up in my editing tutorials.

What I like about Luminar is that it gives photographers a combination of traditional editing tools and some genuinely useful AI-powered features, without necessarily requiring you to disappear down an editing rabbit hole for hours.

I still use Lightroom and Photoshop, and I don’t see Luminar as something that has to replace everything else in your editing workflow.

Instead, I tend to use different programs for the things they do particularly well.

The new Luminar experience

Luminar has also recently had quite a substantial redesign.

The updated interface brings the main editing tools together into a much cleaner workspace, so there’s less jumping backwards and forwards between different areas of the program.

Your editing tools, presets and creative features are much easier to access, while tools such as Generative Erase and the other AI-assisted features can help with everything from removing distractions to fixing backgrounds and expanding the possibilities of an image.

Who is Luminar for?

I think Luminar is particularly interesting for photographers who want powerful editing tools without necessarily wanting to learn every corner of Photoshop.

It can be great for beginners because many of the adjustments are visual and relatively intuitive, but there’s also plenty there for more experienced photographers who simply want another creative tool in their editing kit.

And that’s probably the important bit.

You don’t need every piece of photography software available.

If Lightroom and Photoshop already do everything you need, don’t buy something simply because it’s on sale.
