Getting started with video can become expensive surprisingly quickly. There’s the camera, the mounts, the microphone, and suddenly your “little video project” has its own shopping list.
SJCAM is aiming to make that starting point more affordable with the SJ6 Ultra, an action camera offering native 4K recording, built-in stabilisation and vertical shooting, with a selection of mounts and accessories included.
Priced at US$129, it’s aimed at entry-level creators, travel vloggers and anyone wanting to capture their adventures without committing to the cost of a premium action camera.
Made for adventures and everyday content
The SJ6 Ultra features a 166-degree ultra-wide field of view, giving you plenty of room to capture the scene around you. That could be useful for travel footage, riding adventures or showing viewers a location from your perspective.
SJCAM’s updated SteadyMotion V2.0 stabilisation is designed to reduce camera shake and vibration when filming on the move. For anyone recording while walking or riding, steadier footage is certainly a welcome feature.
The supplied waterproof housing is rated to a depth of 30 metres. So, if your adventures involve getting more than your feet wet, there’s an option for taking the camera underwater too.
Vertical video without the extra cropping
One feature that caught my attention is native vertical recording.
According to SJCAM, the SJ6 Ultra can capture high-resolution vertical footage without turning the camera sideways or cropping horizontal footage afterwards. For people creating Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts or TikTok videos, that could make shooting for those platforms a little easier.
As someone who creates content for several different channels, I can see the appeal of thinking about the final format while filming, rather than trying to make everything fit later.
An affordable option for wireless audio
Audio deserves just as much attention as the footage, particularly if you’re talking to camera or explaining what you’re doing.
The SJ6 Ultra supports pairing with SJCAM’s optional M4 Wireless Microphone, listed at US$14.99. It gives creators an inexpensive way to add a dedicated microphone to their setup.
How it handles voices, wind and background noise would be something to assess in practice, but the price makes it an accessible addition for those starting out.
Useful features without a long list of extras
The camera also includes voice control for hands-free operation and works with the SJCAM X app. The app supports wireless firmware updates, removing the need to manually load updates onto an SD card.
A selection of mounts and accessories comes in the box, which is worth considering when comparing prices. The camera itself is only part of the cost of getting ready to film, particularly if you need to attach it to different surfaces or equipment.

SJCAM lists the SJ6 Ultra at US$129, with a UK Amazon listing at £99.99. The optional M4 Wireless Microphone is listed separately at US$14.99. Australian pricing was not included in the announcement.
For creators looking for an affordable introduction to action cameras, the SJ6 Ultra offers a useful mix of features on paper. Native 4K, vertical recording and included mounting accessories give beginners several ways to start experimenting with video.
I haven’t tested it myself, so this is a look at what SJCAM has announced. The real test will be how those features perform once the camera is out shooting.
