News - Tamron brings its compact 20–40mm F2.8 lens to Nikon Z
Sometimes you want to head out with your camera without packing half the studio. A compact zoom that gives you room to explore, without adding too much weight, certainly has its appeal.
Tamron has announced its 20–40mm F/2.8 Di III VXD (Model A062) for Nikon Z mount, bringing this lens to Nikon’s full-frame mirrorless cameras. Previously released for Sony E-mount, the Nikon Z version will go on sale on 22 October 2026.
With a constant F2.8 maximum aperture, a weight of just 380g and a length of 88.7mm, it offers an interesting combination for travel, everyday photography and video.
A focal range with room to get creative
The 20–40mm range is what catches my attention here. At 20mm, you have an ultra-wide view for landscapes, interiors and compositions where the surroundings play a big part in the story.
Move towards 40mm and you have a more natural perspective for everyday scenes and environmental portraits. I can see the appeal for photographers who enjoy including a person’s location in the image, rather than always moving in for a tight headshot.
On Nikon Z APS-C cameras, the lens provides a full-frame equivalent field of view of 30–60mm.
The constant F2.8 maximum aperture also gives you flexibility when working in lower light or wanting some separation between your subject and background.
Getting closer, with a different perspective
The close-focusing capability is another feature that interests me, particularly for flowers, food and still life.
At the 20mm end, the lens has a minimum focusing distance of 17cm and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.8. This opens up opportunities to photograph a subject up close while still including its surroundings.
Think of a flower with the garden behind it, or a small detail in a larger still life arrangement. It encourages a different approach to composition, where the background becomes part of the photograph.
It isn’t a dedicated 1:1 macro lens, but there is plenty of creative potential in that wider close-up view.
Designed for stills and video
The lens uses Tamron’s VXD linear motor autofocus system, which the company describes as providing fast, precise focusing for both photography and video.
The wide end could be useful for vlogging and filming yourself, while the compact size should appeal to anyone trying to keep their camera setup manageable.
The zoom ring has a rotation angle of 65 degrees, allowing you to move through the focal range with a relatively small turn.
