What's your editing workflow like?

It might sound like a weird question, but what does your editing workflow look like? Are you all over the place and jump from image to image or do you have a system?

I was recently asked what my workflow was and I released it is something I have never really spoken about before. Once I am at a shoot I try to be intentional with my images, but let’s be honest sometimes I get a little excited and still shoot like a maniac and come away with far too many images. So here is my process for editing:

1. Download from SD Card on PC I then go through and do a cursory glance, anything that is badly out of focus (without intentionally being so), or completely random (accidental floor shots) I delete.

2. I Import into my Lightroom Catalogue into a designated folder. I have folders set up for Holidays, Day Trips, Still Life, Studio Shoots and so on. I also have them set up by year.

3. Once loaded into Lightroom I then check each image briefly and if it is one I really like I give it 5 stars if I am not 100% certain I give it 4 stars, anything I don’t like or seems to be a duplicate I leave unmarked.

4. I might pick my absolute favourites and do a quick edit, but then I try and walk away for at least an hour, preferably a day.

5. I then go back and re-check my top five star picks (check the filter in the gallery), anything I decide is still pretty much a duplicate or I don’t love so much I then change the star rating to a four.

6. Hopefully bu this stage I have my images down to something more manageable; 20-30 for a studio shoot, 5-10 for a still life shoot, 20=50 for a day trip and so on. Sometimes it is even less

7. I then take the first image and do a general tidy up (sensor spots), white balance adjustments, Lens adjustments and then batch sync for all the images in that folder.

8. I then proceed to edit my images, knowing that it is far more manageable with the dozens or even 100s of unwanted images.

I don’t delete the unused stuff, as I never know WHEN I might need something from them.
