How I got the Photo: Pear Still Life and Light Painting
Basic setup
The setup
Something that I love doing is Light Painting with still life, but it’s been a while. I must admit. So it felt nice to get back into the studio and test out my new Variable ND Filter from K&F CONCEPT The setup is above. I used some painted wine bottles as candle holders, some pears on a timber box with my black V-flats as the background. I like to keep things simple. I also took a secondary image of the candles lit (without the ND Filter).
Gear used
I used my Sony A7R5 and Tamron 28-75mm lens, I used a Harlowe Iris LED light on 10% and the Iris was almost closed to paint my light. I was also in a dark room with no ambient lighting. My settings were ISO 100, f/11, 30 seconds at 36mm. Obviously, my camera was on a tripod. It was challenging to get enough light on the subject without making ‘squiggly’ lines and such. See below. You know you are moving too slow when you see these white squiggly lines on your photos.
Moving too slowly with your light causes white squiggly lines.
Editing
I took my final Light Painted image and a shot I took of the candle flames into Photoshop and merged them. I then did a Dodge and Burn and used my Cinematic Photoshop Actions to create depth and drama. Finished off with a light texture (Atmosphere Texture Pack) on the background.
