My 13 Favourite Studio Accessories That Are Not What You Think
When people think of studio gear, they picture tripods, light stands, and giant softboxes. But after years of shooting, I’ve learned that the little, often-overlooked tools can make all the difference.
Here are my 13 favourite studio accessories — none of which are tripods or light stands, and some might really surprise you.
1. Clamps (All the Clamps!)
Big, small, spring-loaded — they hold everything from backdrops and props to clothes and cables.
2. Blu-Tack & Gaffer’s Tape
The ultimate fix-it duo. Blu-tack props up delicate objects; gaffer tape holds just about anything else.
3. Step Ladder
Not glamorous but essential for high angles, adjusting backdrops, and reaching shelves. Gorilla Step Ladder
4. Step Stools (Two Colours)
I keep two colourful Ikea step stools that double as seats for me or my subjects. Functional and fun.
5. Spray Bottles & Water Droppers
A quick mist or drop brings flowers, glass, and even skin to life with a beautiful shine.
6. Music Speaker
Music keeps the energy high, helps people relax, and makes the shoot more enjoyable.
7. 5-in-1 Reflector
One of the most versatile tools around — bounce light, diffuse it, block it, or add warmth with just one accessory. K&F CONCEPT Reflector
8. Camera Monitor
Seeing your shots on a larger screen while shooting helps you perfect the details without squinting. I adore the Viltrox Monitor.
9. Microphone
Good audio makes a huge difference for BTS videos, YouTube, or even just recording directions. Hollyland have some great choices
10. SD Card Holder
Tiny but crucial — keeps your cards organised, safe, and easy to grab. Slate II by Polar Pro is my go-to choice.
11. Black Foam Mats
Perfect for kneeling or sitting on damp or hard floors — saves your knees and keeps you comfortable.
12. Hollywood Tape
Also known as fashion tape — this double-sided wonder keeps clothes, fabric, and even props exactly where you want them.
13. CAMERA STRAPS
Peak Design have some amazing camera straps to keep your camera safe and secure.
And just for good measure: a bonus shout-out to my light meter, which helps me nail tricky lighting setups quickly and precisely.
These humble tools save time, spark creativity, and make shoots smoother and more enjoyable.
