Inside the Ballan Retreat: A Weekend of Light, Creativity and Connection

Inside the Ballan Retreat: A Weekend of Light, Creativity and Connection

There’s something different about a full weekend retreat.

It’s not rushed. It’s not “shoot and go.”
It’s immersive. It builds. It unfolds slowly, and before you realise it, you’re completely in it.

The Ballan Retreat wasn’t just about creating images, it was about the experience of creating them, and what that does to you as a photographer.

Let me take you inside the weekend.

Saturday Morning: Finding Our Rhythm

The first session is always a mix of excitement and just a little bit of nerves.

New faces, new spaces, cameras being unpacked, settings being double-checked. You can feel that quiet anticipation in the room.

And then… we start shooting.

We began with two very different energies.
Skye Medusa stepped into rich, dramatic Gothic Glamour, while Holly McKenna brought that timeless Hollywood Glamour feel.

Straight away, photographers were making decisions, how to use the light, where to position themselves, how to approach two completely different moods.

And that’s where it starts.

Not just taking photos, but learning to see light and respond to it.

Saturday Afternoon: Gatsby Energy & Creative Play

By the afternoon, everything shifts.

People relax. Confidence builds. You can almost see the hesitation disappear.

Then we introduced our Gatsby / 1920s-inspired styling, with both Skye and Holly transformed once again.

This is where people began to move beyond settings and into storytelling.

Instead of asking “what should I do?”, it became
“what do I want this image to feel like?”

Angles changed.
Light became more intentional.
And for many, this was the moment they started trusting their instincts.

Saturday Evening: The Farmhouse Wind Down

After a full day, we headed back to the farmhouse.

No pressure. No structured learning. Just time.

This is where ideas get shared, where people talk through what worked, what didn’t, and what they want to try next.

It might not look like “learning” on the surface, but it’s where confidence quietly builds.

Because you realise you’re not the only one figuring things out.

Sunday Morning: Vintage Glamour & Growing Confidence

By Sunday morning, something had shifted.

The hesitation was gone.

With Nicola Paige and Jesi Faun stepping into Vintage Glamour, photographers approached the session with far more intention.

You could see it in how people were:

  • placing their light more deliberately

  • composing with purpose

  • and starting to direct their models with more clarity

Less guessing.
More control.

And that’s a big turning point.

Sunday Afternoon: Ending on a High

And then we finished with something special.

This final session was a complete surprise, something I’d been quietly building with my team for quite some time.

From the moment I first saw the rooms at Flack PTO, I had this vision sitting in the back of my mind.

With the incredible talents of Jolie on makeup and Rose on hair, we brought to life a bold, layered Lolita / Grunge Marie Antoinette-inspired concept.

Every detail, from costumes to hair and makeup, was carefully crafted.

This wasn’t just about shooting a styled setup.
It was about stepping into a fully realised concept and learning how to work within it.

By this point, people weren’t waiting for direction.

They were:

  • experimenting

  • making creative choices

  • directing the scene in their own way

And that’s where everything comes together.

What Actually Changed Over the Weekend

Yes, we created beautiful images.

But the real shift was this:

Photographers who arrived unsure about their lighting…
left understanding how to shape it.

People who hesitated before pressing the shutter…
started shooting with intent.

Those who weren’t sure how to guide a model…
began giving direction with confidence.

That transformation doesn’t happen in a quick session.

It happens when you have the time, space, and support to actually do the work.

A Personal Note

I had a dream about running something like this.

A full weekend. A complete creative experience.

And I’ll be honest, I didn’t fully realise how much I had poured into it until it was over. There was a lot of coffee, a lot of adrenaline… and yes, a few emotional moments when it all wrapped up.

But seeing that shift in people, that growth, that confidence…

That’s the part that stays with me.

Looking Ahead

This retreat was intentionally small.

That allowed for more one-on-one guidance, more space to shoot, and more time for each person to really settle into their own creative process.

Next year, I’d love to open it up just a little more.

Not by a huge amount, but enough to give a few more photographers the opportunity to experience this, while still keeping that same supportive, hands-on feel.

Because that balance matters.

Thank You

To everyone who joined me at Ballan, thank you.

For your trust, your energy, your creativity, and for fully stepping into the experience.

You made the weekend what it was.

If you’d like early access to future retreats (and first chance at those limited spots), make sure you’re on the VIP list.

That’s always where everything gets released first.
